DEATH OF POET
“BANJO” PATERSON PASSES (United Press Assn.— Elec. Tel. Copyright) SYDNEY, Feb. 5 The death has occurred of Mr Andrew Barton Paterson, familiarly known as “Banjo” Paterson, whose poems and ballads o* Australian bush life have made his name a household word throughout the Commonwealth. He was aged 76. Mr Paterson practiced law until 1900, when he v/ent to the South African War as a war correspondent. Later he was correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald in the Phili - pines during the Spanish-American War, in China dur.ng the Boxer Rebellion, and at the start of the last war. Entering the forces he rose to the rank of major. His first book was “The Man from Snowy River,” written in 1895, and his later works included poems, fiction, sketches and books of travel.
