AMERICAN LEGISLATION APPROVED BY SENATE YEAR’S TRAINING PLAN (United Press Assn.—Llec. Tel. Copyright) (Received August 6, 3.15 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 5 The Senate’s Military Committee adopted by 12 to 3 votes the revised Conscription Bill, affecting 12,000,000 men between the ages of 21 and 31 years. The exemptions leave an estimated 4,500,000 men, from whom the Army expects to draft 400,000 in the autumn and the same number in the spring for a year’s training. Opponents of the Bill are submitting a minority report. Mr Roosevelt has named Mr James V. Forrestal for the newlycreated post of Assistant-Secretary to the Navy. Insidious Nazi Methods The Attorney-General, Mr Jackson, stated that Axis influences are trying to “soften this country, .s France was softened, by promises of business orders and profits. “Efforts are being made to create a Fifth Column among men of influence and respectability in the United States.” Mr Roosevelt sent a message to the espionage conference, proposing that Congress and State Legislatures enact companion legislation “dealing with subversive activities and seditious acts. Those things are slowing up and breaking down the common defence programme.”
