KICKING WINS GAME

FRANKTON BEATS TAUPIRI Penalty kicking played a big part n the Stag Trophy match on the No. 2 ground at headquarters on Saturday and actually enabled Frankton to defeat Taupiri by 12 points to 9. Both teams scored one try and Frankton won by securing three penalty kicks while Taupiri landed two penalty kicks. The territorial advantage was evenly distributed, although towards the end of the match Frankton had a difficult task in preventing the opponents from crossing the line. The game was fast, and with fortunes changing all the time the play was interesting throughout. The teams were:— Frankton.—Petch; Aherne, Griffiths, Davies: Reese, Everest; Cassells; Satherley, Wright, Elliott, Newcombe. Belcher. Dick, Bowler, Jackson. Taupiri.—E. Burke; J. Maniapoto, Birkett, D. Burke: E. Taylor, Dowling; W. Tapp; E. Rumney, Carter, J Rumney. Bennett, Shaw; Farren, Catiey. J. M. Taylor. Taupiri missed a chance in the very early stages, when Catley failed to goal with a free kick, and frankton went to the attack early. After a short offensive Frankton secured a penalty kick which Satherley put straight between the posts. Frankton 3, Taupiri 0. Dashing to the attack almost immediately, Taupiri launched a solid offensive. J. Maniapoto kicked for the corner but the ball bounced behind the goal-line and when Petch slipped before forcing. D. Burke sped in to win the touch-down and score. E. Burke missed the kick. Taupiri 3, Frankton 3. Frankton’s Offensive Taupiri maintained the upper hand for a considerable time but Frankton gradually turned defence into attack and the forwards, in a characteristic loose dribbling bout, carried the advantage into the opposition twentyfive. After a temporary reverse, Frankton applied the pressure and, when Everest cleverly kicked for a gap, Elliott and Aherne followed up speedily and caught E. Burke in possession. Aherne robbed the fullback of possession and scored. Satherley missed the kick. Frankton 6, Taupiri 3. Reece, who was injured just previously, was replaced by Jones. Frankton forwards were disorganising Taupiri’s defence and several times carried the attack right to the line. Taupiri infringed and Satherley landed a fine penalty goal. Frankton 9, Taupiri 3. Taupiri had commenced to recover a grip on the game just before halftime when the score was still: Frankton 9 Taupiri 3 The teams were making the play fairly open and the fortunes of the match were changing rapidly just after half-time, but Taupiri secured the better of the exchanges. The Frankton defence presented a solid front, however. Time and again Taupiri dashed to within an ace of scoring, but Frankton gradually forced the attackers back. Taupiri then infringed in a scrum and Satherley landed another fine free kick. Frankton 12, Taupiri 3. Immediately Taupiri retaliated and when Jackson played off-side, Tapp kicked a brilliant free-kick from a very acute angle. Frankton 12, Taupiri 6. Stern Duel A stern duel between the two opposing packs characterised the ensuing play in which Farren tried several times to launch short-pass-ing bouts among the men of the Taupiri vanguard. Frankton still pre- ; served the advantage in the backs, j however, and the team had a chance ; when Everest, Griffith and Davies J co-operated to force Taupiri into its 1 twenty-five. Jackson missed a free kick at goal by only a slight margin, j Taupiri was anxious to make up | the leeway and the team thrust a de- ; termined attack which was carried right to Frankton’s line. For several minutes the Taupiri forwards hammered away, unable to penetrate the superb Frankton defence. Doggedness in adversity stood Frankton in good stead and the side carried the day right to Taupiri’s twenty-five, when the backs fed Jones who cut out Maniapoto before Griffiths and Aherne combined in the devastating run. Over-running the Frankton when they were out of position, Taupiri’s forwards soon revived theii ! team’s attack. Frankton was penal-, sed and Tapp landed a good penalty goal. The Final score was: Frankton 12 Taupiri 9 I Mr A. Paterson was the referee. TECHNICAL’S VICTORY DEFEATED RAGLAN TEAM In a match at Raglan on Saturday Technical Old Boys secured an-

otner v ictory in defeating Raglan by 12 points to 5 and the team thus moved up to be equal for fourth place with Taupiri in the Stag Trophy championship.
