COSTING SYSTEM
WHAKATANE PAPER MILLS OPINION AT INQUIRY (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday Giving evidence at the Price Investigation Tribunal hearing of the Whakatane Paper Mills application, William Drummond Barclay, registered accountant, of Auckland, a specialist in cost accountancy, said that following instructions at the end of January he went to Whakatane to make a report on the existing system of accounts and to make any suggestions as to future costing. The company’s system of accounts, from an accountancy point of view, was well devised. He had expressed the opinion at the time, however, that the costing system could be extended. Mr Richmond: What you have recommended is not a basic change in the accounts, but rather an extension of them? Witness: “Yes. Mr Richmond: How far could the cost of production be lowered by the use of waste in place of some pulp wood?—That would not affect operational costs except in a technical way. The hearing -was adjourned till Monday.
