SYNOD CONSTITUTION REPRESENTATION OF LAITY (By Telegrtph. —Presi Association) NELSON, Saturday A Bill to amend a canon of General Synod, having the effect of reducing the number of representative* of the laity from four to three for each diocese, was defeated on a division on the second reading. The subject arose out of the report of a commission appointed to investigate the constitution and procedure of General Synod. All six members of the commission recommended a reduction in the number of lay representatives. The Bishop of Dunedin, as chairman of the commission, said It was desirable to use every means to reduce the expenditure on the sessions. Mr H. D. Andrews (Christchurch) summed up the general opinion of j laymen when he said that the more laymen who could be interested in the high courts of the church, the more its decisions would be accepted by the general body of church people. The small amount of expense saved did not warrant the reduction. The voting on the division wa*:— Bishops: Ayes 6, noes 1; clergy, aye* 14, noes 10; laity, ayes 8, noes 21. The Bill was therefore declared lost.
