FUTURE NEEDS
PATRIOTIC EFFORTS FUNDS MAY BE BUILT UP ADVICE TO OTAGO COUNCIL (By Telegraph.—Press Association) DUNEDIN, Saturday An important pronouncement on the functions and power* of provincial patriotic council* has been conveyed to the Mayor, Mr Allen, in a telegram from the Minister of Internal Affair*, the the Hon. W. Parry, the effect of which is that the regulations empower councils to provide for future requirements. The Otago Council had delayed it* canvass of business firms for funds to provide comforts for men in camps ani troopships, as it desired the right to build up a fund, as in the last war, to meet the needs of Otago men on their return from the war, when through sickness or wounds they and their dependents might require some supplementing of their military pensions. The Minister’s reply states that he considers the regulation gives the power sought, and that the gazetting of an amendment to the regulations will be referred to the National Council. The telegram concludes, “ The urgent need appears to me to be for the provision of comforts overseas.”
