SINKING OF SULTAN STAR
FAMILIAR IN NEW ZEALAND MANY RECORDS ESTABLISHED (United Press Assn.— vnc. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 14 The New York radio picked up an S.O.S. message from the British freighter Sultan Star, of 12,306 tons, saying she had been torpedoed 230 miles south-west of Land’s End. The crew were abandoning ship, according to this message. One of the largest cargo ships in the world when she was launched from the Birkenhead yards of Cammell, Laird and Company in 1930, the steamer Sultan Star was a familar ship on the New Zealand coast, particularly in her earlier trading days. Her speed resulted in many records being established between England and New Zealand,, paving a way for the cargo ships of all times which have in recent years eclipsed passenger vessels in fast voyaging on this route.
