LIKELY MAIDEN
LORD ACE—MATAMATA SHAPED WELL ON HOME TRACK Among the likely improvers engaged in novice company on the first day at Te Rapa is the Matamata maiden, Lord Ace, who on his home course less than a fortnight ago accounted for all but Lady Clorane and Merry Vaals and returned the surprising place dividend of over a third of a century. Jumping out smartly he was always one of the leading division and after following Misora at the half-mile and hitting the front at the home turn he did not have quite sufficient in reserve over the last little bit to withstand the challenging runs of Lady Colrane and the favourite. However, that performance was a most encouraging one and as he should be benefited by that outing at Matamata he may make amends here in the Trial Stakes. Merry Vaals, who deprived him of second money at Matamata, will now be ineligible to start as a result of his Rotorua success, the event being open only to horses that have not won a race of any description at a totalisator meeting at time of starting.
