CHURCH OF ENGLAND

QUESTIONS FOR SYNOD ELECTION OF PRIMATE Among important questions to be considered at the General Synod of the Church of England to open in Nelson next Wednesday, February 14, is the election of the successor to Archbishop A. W. Averill, Auckland, Primate of New Zealand, whose retirement from the Primacy is to take effect on March 31. Several reports will be presented by commissions which have been meeting since the last session three years ago. The subjects concerned are marriage and divorce, St. John’s Theological College, a syllabus of religious instruction in Church secondary schools, and a three-year plan. The recommendation of the commission on the three-year plan will fall under two main headings: (1) A proposal for the inauguration of a “Movement of Life and Thought” throughout the province; (2) a proposal for the greater centralisation of the administration of the province, notably by the establishment of the Primacy permanently in Wellington. On Wednesday evening, February 14, the official Synod service will be held in Nelson Cathedral. The preacher will be his Grace the Archbishop of Sydney, Dr. Mowll. The Synod will be formally constituted after the roll-call in the cathedral at 10 a.m. next day, and a celebration of the Holy Communion will follow. The Primate will deliver his presidential address in the Marsden Church House, where the business sessions will be held at 3 p.m. After this the Synod will proceed with the order paper.
