OSMAN PASHA’S PROMISE

Under-Secre-i tary of Finance, proposing a toast of j “ England and Egypt ” at a banquet ; last night attended by representatives ; of all political parties, announced that a fund had been opened for the J benefit of the British troops in Egypt ; “as an expression of Egypt’s apprecia- ! lion of those bearing the brunt of the j country’s defence.” Donations had already been received from leading Egyptians, including the Prime Min- , j ister and other members of the Cab- ; inet and the Opposition. Osman Pasha added that Egypt now ! had perfect trust in Britain. “We ! are allied with Britain, not because : we have signed a treaty, but because we are fighting for Britain’s cause, namely, justice,” he said. “We will ; be Britain’s ally whatever happens.” The British Ambassador, Sir Miles Lampson, in reply, said the existing close co-operation between Britain . and Egypt was one of the few good things created by the present unhappy state of the world. He added that Britain was determined to abide loyally by the treaty of alliance, and ! to respect Egypt’s rights.

REPAYMENT IN TIN CREDITS TO OTHER COUNTRIES (United Press Assn.—EP»r. Tel. Copyright' WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 The loan administrator of the Import and Export Bank revealed that the proposed new loan to China will be repayable in tin. The Bill provides that China shall receive 20,000,000 dollars in addition to the 25,000,000 previously lent to her. The Government is also considering granting credits to Norway, Sweden and Colombia.
