PALESTINE UNREST

SOLUTION SUGGESTED ADDRESS BY MR E. E. BARROWS To settle the Palestine problem it would be necessary to employ as a basis the suggestions outlined in the three volumes of sacred law. the Rib’-, the Talmud and Ihe Koran, said Mr E. E. Barrows, of Wellington, speaking on behalf of the New Zealand Rrilisli Israel World Federation, in Hamilton last night. All three hooks spoke of the original gift of land between the Nile and Ihe Euphralos, hut the speaker did not suggest, the partitioning of Palestine, nor. the abandonment of ihe situation there by Britain. Mr Barrows traced the history of Palestine from the time it was dominated by Rome until it became a protectorate under Britain and I lie League of Nations. Since the conclusion of tlie Great War anti-British propaganda had undermined the administration there and he believed that was due mainly to the activities of cec- ! tain dissatisfied nations in Europe, i One leader, as a gesture to the Mohammedans. had proclaimed himself Protector of Islam. The country was of immense strategic value and in the speaker's opinion any country holding Palestine during the next ten years would he aide to dominate both Europe and Asia. Origin of Unrest Referring ro the origin of the unrest in Palestine, Mr Barrows said that the country had long been troubled with agrarian problems. The lew had secured the land from the Arabs. Tfrc , abs, fearing the Jews were trying dispossess them of the territory, ret. i.ited and the Jews approached the* Government, which had to support their claim. This aroused the antagonism of the Arabs, who concluded the Government was siding with Ihe Jews and they formed gangs, the activities of which had eaus ;d Britain to scud troops to maintain order.
