MEETING OF COUNCIL

PIPES FOR NEW RESERVOIR MORRINSVILLE, Tuesday The Morrinsville Borough Council met last evening, the deputy-mayor, Mr W. Morrice, presiding. The town clerk reported that the first lot of steel pipes on order for the new reservoir would come to hand in a few days, and the rest would be delivered before the end of May. The pipes would be used for a pipeline of about a mile from the water main in Kixvitahi Road to the site -of the new reservoir on the top of Kuranui Hill, which overlooks the town. The reservoir will be started by \V. S. Goosman and Company, Limited, as soon as material has been carted to the job. Record Year For Building A record year for building in the Morrinsville Borough was announced by the town clerk, Mr A. G. Strahan. Permits for £38,154 were issued by the council during the year ended March 31, compared with £30,781 for 1937-38, and £20,582 for 1936-37. These figures for the year do not take into consideration the 16 State houses and the new Morrinsville High School for seven classrooms. Among the new buildings nearing completion is a block of seven lockup shops in Thames Street West, a few chains from the Morrinsville saleyards. These are being built for Mr G. Hutchinson, who built four shops in Studholme Street last year. High Rate Collection Only £22 0 of rates, equivalent to less than 3 per cent were outstanding at March 31, stated the town clerk, in a review of the rating positionRates collected totalled £8025 or 97-37 per cent for the current year, compared with 95.71 per cent for 1937-38. Of the arrears 73.2 per cent had been collected or written off. Councillors commented that few local bodies in New Zealand could equal Morrinsville as regard the collection of rates. Morgue for District Advice was received that the Piako City Council was prepared to contribute £IOO toward the cost of a morgue for the Morrinsville district. The building is estimated to cost £250. The council deferred consideration of this matter until.it is bringing down estimates for the current year.
