ROAD SEALING
PIAKO COUNTY WORK ENGINEER’S PROPOSALS (Spccila to Times) TE AROIiA, Tuesday The main highways in the Piako County totaJ 9i miles, or which 74 miles are now tar-sealerl. The length or the county side roads, ns reported to the council by its engineer. Mr R. 11. Horner, is 284 miles, nearly all or which is metalled. Twenty-two miles or side road* had been sealed, at the cost or the riflings. The speed at which .the traffic now travels with the weigh t allowed on the roads renders the maintenance, of the roads extremely difficult.
The engineer said it appeared to him to be sound policy to To 1 low a sealing programme for side roads, and to endeavour to secure a subsidy rrom the petrol fund, which at present is used Tor the main highways only. He suggested that in the coming year the Morrinsvilie-Taupiri main highway he completed, also the Tahuna-Ohinewai road, and it possible, the sealing ol' one or two miles each <>i the Ngatea-Walmroa main highway at Maukoro. and the WaitoaMaukoro road at Springdale. Order of Importance He recommended the sealing of the following roads in order or importance:— Bowler-Stanley, 3 miles, estimated cost £1600; No. 3,2 miles, £1600; Harbottle’s. 1 i miles, £750: Gordon, 1 mile, £780; Diagonal, l j miles, £970; stanley-Mana-waru, 1} miles, £lO su; WaiorongomaiMaungakawa, 3 miles, £1600; I’iakoiti, l mile, £850; Ilangawera, 1 mile, £850; total, £10.550. The probable expenditure on main highways work was estimated by Mr Horner as Follows: Morrinsvilie-Taupiri, 6 miles, £7500. Tah una - Ohinewa i, £2600. Waitoa-Maukoro. £2OO. The report will be considered by the council and (information obtained relative xo probable subsidies.
