BEEF DROPS STEEPLY

DULL FRANKTON MARKET P!G SUPPLY SLOW OF SALE FAT SHEEP IN GOOD REQUEST Beef of all classes dropped steeply at Frankton yesterday, the reverse being the most substantial experienced this year, steers being cheaper by at least 15s per head and cows and heifers by 10s to 20s per head. A large entry of fat sheep sold considerably better than anticipated, while wellfinished fat pigs were firmer of sale.

The moderate entry of steers consisted mainly of light-weight sorts for which bids came slowly. Medium prime descriptions were traded from £lO 5s to £ll 15s, while lighter cattle were knocked down from £8 2s 6d to £9. Small and rough descriptions were sold from £6 to £7 ss. The drop per 1001 b. was fully equal to 2s, prime ox from 28s to 31s selling at the lowest level since last winter. Plain and inferior ox was quoted from 22s to 27s in comparison with 23s to 28s last week. The demand was similarly slack in the cow and heifer beef department where all classes were cheaper, the decline here also amounting to approximately 2s per 4 001 b. Good sorts were traded from £6 19s to £7 11s, but the bulk of the entry was traded at prices below £5 10s. Cheaper rates also ruled in the calf section, while the entry of boners proved in excess of requirements. Sheep and Pigs Although lower rates ruled at the beginning of the sale of fat sheep, there was an improvement later in the sale and values returned to firm levels. Lines of attractive wethers sold at 22s 6d, while other good lines were traded from 19s to 21s, a top bid of 23s 9d being obtained for a pair of exceptional sorts. A line of maiden ewes sold at 17s 6d, while from 11s 9d to 16s 6d was given for extra prime sorts, the latter figure being Is 6d better than the best money of last week. Fat lambs sold readily at schedule rates.

While pigs lacking finish were again slow of sale, there was a firmer demand for well-finished sorts, the improvement for baconers being up to 2s per head and sometimes more in the case of porkers. Baconers were sold from 59s to 74s against 59s to 72s last week, and porkers from 28s to 58s in comparison with 28s to 545. A weaker market was experienced for store pigs and all sorts were cheaper.
