DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA
SPIRIT OF THE PEOPLE KEENER THAN IN DOMINION “The people in Australia are much more alive to the necessity for defence than in New Zealand and they take national defence very seriously," said Mr A. L. Tompkins, of Hamilton, when he returned yesterday from a visit to the Commonwealth. As an instance of the spirit of the Australians regarding: defence, Mr Tompkins said the Minister of External Mr \V. M. Hughes, had aimed to enlfst 70,000 volunteers for the Australian militia forces and the number had been considerably exceeded In less time than was expected. "The main trouble experienced by the Government," added Mr Tompkins, "was to secure sufficient equipment for the augmented forces.” The new recruits all encamped at Easter and at the camp at Liverpool which Mr Tompkins visited the work of the men appeared to be efficient and was underlaken in a keen spirit.
