BRITISH EMBARRASSMENT

Copyright) Received Dec. 29, 11.5 a.m. LONDON*, Dec. 28 The Australian Associated Press says that Sir Clair O'Malley. British Minister at Ilendaye, lias arrived in London to enable Viscount Halifax to hear personally the result of the inquiries into the diplomatic bag mystery. Sir Clair was sent to Burgos immediately after the incident. It is understood that inquiries have so far not relieved the British embarrassment resulting from the discovery. Sir Clair reported that there is no foundation to the stories of the arrest of British Consulate officials. THE POPE GIVES £IOOO HELP FOR BASQUE CHILDREN (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Dec. 29, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 28 The Barcelona correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, in examining the merits of air offensives in modern warfare, points out that the Spanish experience has shown that the great speed of the latest machines results in definite disadvantages. It makes accurate bombing and machine-gunning most difficult, and necessitates larger reserves of skilled pilots and longer training. He adds that there have been examples of remarkably accurate bombing in Spain, but these occurred when there was no opposition from the ground defences.
