BATHING IN “SHORTS”

REGULATIONS AT LAKE “NECK-TO-KNEE” OBSOLETE (Regulations which have been In force in Hamilton for many years restricting bathing apparel to be worn at the Lake to the "neck-to-knee” style were ruled as being obsolete by the Hamilton Domain Board last evening when acting upon a letter received from the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. In future trunks will be permissible as bathing attire at the Lake. Mr W. H. Paul, chairman of the Domain Board, said the board decided some years ago that bathing costume regulations at the Lake should conform with those set down by the Hamilton Borough Council far the municipal baths. For that reason trunks had been forbidden. “I think that the regulations are somewhat obsolete,” said Mr H. D. Caro, Mayor of Hamilton. “People walk about the streets in every town in New Zealand in shorts and no objection Is taken to it.” “Sometimes the attire worn by bathers is a little scanty,” said Mr J. R. Fow. Mr F. A. Swarbrick considered that any bathing apparel was all right so long as it complied with police regulations.

“\Ve will have to give in eventually,” said Dr. H. Douglas, “because no one wears “neck-to-knee” costumes these days. In fact, they cannot be purchased in the shops.”
