A. D. BROWN EXTENDED YESTERDAY’S SINGLES FLAY D. C. COOMBE DEFEATS J. ROACH (Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Friday A stern five-set encounter between A. D. Brown and J. T. Mayson in the quarter-finals of the men's singles was a feature of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's championships, which were continued yesterday. Brown, who is the favourite for the title, was within an ace of losing the match when he trailed Mayson 3—l in the final set, but he rallied wonderfully to win 6—4. J. Roach Waikato) met a formidable opponent from the point of view of experience in D. C. Coombe, the New Zealand Davis Cup representative, but it is safe to say that, had his forehand been as reliable as his attacking backhand, he would have won the match. As it was, Coombe took full toll of Roach's poor shots on the forehand and slowed down, the games that Rocah could not gain the advantage which he invariably won on high-bounding balls. The title-holders in the men's doubles, N. G. Sturt and J. W. Gunn, were too strong for the young Waikato pair, L. Roach and R. Matuschka, whom they defeated in straight sets.
