A MAORI NAME.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Seeing the name of the vessel that recently struck a rock In Cook Strait given as Rangatira I concluded that it was a mis-print, hut I have since been told by a friend who saw the steamer in Wellington that that is the correct spelling. I should like to know if the Maori people agree with this. Assuming that the word means “chief," should it not be spelt “rangitira"? I am sure that is how we spelt it in the old days, but we may have been wrong. If we were, would someone with a knowledge of the Maori language let us know the difference in the meaning indicated by the “a" instead of the “i"?—I am, etc., EARLY SETTLER. Te Awamufcu, February 19.
