OBITUARY.

MRB M. BARTON. The death occurred yesterday, at her residence, Thackeray Street, of Mrs Marion Barton, widow of the late Mr G. J. W. Barton, one of the pioneer* of the district who died nearly a year ago. Born in Chippenham, Wiltshire, England, in 1853, the late Mrs Barton came to New Zealand in 1865 on the sailing vessel Ulcoats with her two sisters. They were under the charge of the captain as their parents had come to New Zealand before them. In 1879 she was married to the late Mr' Burton in the Anglican Church, Ngaruawahia, by the Rev. William Calder. Though of a retiring disposition, the late Mrs Barton was alway* interested in the welfare of the town and as a young woman was a prominent church worker. During her husband’s term of office as Mayor she was a capable associate in the office of Mayoress. Mrs Barton’s father, the late Mr Henry Edgecumbe, of Hamilton, was one of the early pioneers and her brothers, the late Messrs George, John and Frank Edgecumbe were prominently associated with the growth of Hamilton from a mere village. She is survived by seven children, Mrs S. A. Empson Awamutu), Mrs M. V. Hill (Hamilton), Mrs M. U. Lawrence (Hamilton), Miss Lucy Barton (Wellington), Mr C. F. E. Barton, the clerk of the Waikato County Council, Mr J. E. Barton (Auckland) and Mr L. Barton (Hamilton). There are 13 grandchildren. MR JAMEB A. HANNAH. WELLINGTON, Thursday. The death has occurred of Mf James Alexander Hannah, after a long illness. Mr Hannah was the eldest son of the late Mr R. Hannah and his life’s work has been that of assisting his father build up the present large organisation of R. Hannah and Company, Limited.
