RAILWAY REVENUE
WORKING LOSS OF £6384. RESTORATION OF SALARY CUTS. FOUR WEEKS TO NOVEMBER 9. WELLINGTON, Thursday. A retrograde movement of £58,365 is shown by the net revenue of the railways for the four-weekly period ended November 9 compared with the results for the corresponding period last year. A working loss of £6384 replaces a profit of £51,981. As explained in a preliminary statement on November 30 expenditure for the period Includes £63,000 on account of the 7J per cent, increase In salaries and wages made restrospectlve to August 1. But for this item, therd would have been an improvement of some £4OOO.
The railway working accounts for tlie period, an abstract of which appeared in to-night's Gazette, shows the gross receipts to have been £488,240, an increase of £20,825 on the tigure last year. Expenses at £494,G 24 were £79,190 higher. Earnings toy the North Island railways were - £262,517 an increase of £12,836, and expenses £270,435 or £45,720 higher. There was a loss of £7918 compared with a profit of £24,966 last year.
Receipts from the South Island railways were £168,558, an increase of £4647, and expenses were £192,173 or £30,609 higher. There was a working loss of £23,615 compared with a profit of £2347.
The Year to Date
Miscellaneous revenue amounted to £57,165 and expenditure to £32,016, there being a net yield of £25,149, an increase of £4Bl on last year. For the period from April 1 to November 9 the net revenue was £354,151 as against £348,416 last year, the increase being £5735. The gross revenue was £3,893,772, an increase of £174,519. The expenditure was £3,539,621 compared with £3,370,837, an increase of £168,784. Following is a summary of the net results for the corresponding periods of four weeks in the last three years:
