NIAGARA DELAYED
ONE SEAMAN SHORT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Thursday. The liner Niagara, which was originally scheduled to sail for Vancouver at 5 p.m. yesterday, was still in port, at midday. Late cargo caused the first delay in her departure, hut since It p.m. yesterday Hie ship has been ready to sail, hut is held up because she is one seaman short. One seaman went ashore ill and the shipping company lias been unable to till tlie vacancy. The ship is on Australian articles. As a result of the delay the New Zealand University hockey team will miss the first test match which it was to play at Suva on Saturday. On tlie vessel’s arrival at Auckland last Monday, a seaman was sent to hospital to have his teeth extracted. To hit the vacancy a New Zealand seaman was signed on, but. late yesterday afternoon it was learned that the new member of Hie crew would not sail. Efforts were made to find a substitute up to midnight, but these proved fruitless. The time of sailing was then announced as 10 o'clock lliis morning, hut it then was altered hour by hour. Throughout the morning cargo loading continued, Ihe vessel Inking on hoard freight which would normally have, been despatched to Suva by the Waipnhi. There are ISO passengers hooked to sail by Ihe NiagaraSAILED YESTERDAY. NIAGARA GETS AWAY. AUCKLAND I, Friday. Tlie seaman who had previously been signed on the Niagara and had later refused to sail, eventually rejoined the vessel, mid she sailed shortly after three o’clock jesterday afternoon.
