HUSBAND DENIES CHARGES

The Dim actor, John Barrymore, has filed a response to the divorce action instituted by his wife, formerly Dolores Costello, lie makes a general denial of her charges of cruelty and habitual intemperance. Respondent asserts that his wife is a strong, wilful woman. In reply to her charge that lie was intoxicated on board ills yacht, he declares that liis wife held him a virtual prisoner on Die craft for about two and a-half months with women guards. He was not able to work and,' In order to escape from the deadening influence of her presence on his art, he went to New York and later to England. Barrymore is said to have stated that lie offered ids wife 75,000 dollars to settle the case.
