COUNTRY WEEK. TOURNAMENT AT AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, Wednesday. The annual Country Week tournament, held under .the control qf the Auckland Cricket Association, was commenced yesterday. The trophy at stake is the Hellaby Shield, presented last year by Messrs. R. and W. Hellaby, and held at present by Pukekohe. Five country teams, representing North Auckland, South Auckland, Waipa, Pukekohe, Poverty Bay, and an Auckland team took part. The bowling and fielding showed an improvement- on that of past tournaments. N. Vipond, of North Auckland, was the only batsman to score a century, , retiring with 10 i to his credit. The bowlers did well under strange conditions and M. Barnett (Waipa) with seven \viekets for 63 runs, headed the list. Waipa v. Pukekohe. The game between ,Pukekohe anc * Waipa was responsible for some interesting cricket. C. Stoupe gave a sound display in compiling 50 in quiok time in Pukekohe’s first innings.

Waipa failed by 4G runs to reach its opponents’ score. Pulcekohe had a second Innings and P. Howden scored a fast 65 with powerful shots all round the wicket. Pukekohe declared in an endeavour to secure an outright win, but Waipa played out time, Pukekohe gaining a fourpoint win. Poverty Bay v. South Auckland. Poverty Bay and South Auckland gave an interesting display, in which the fielding of the former team was a feature. In South Auckland’s first innings M. Clarke was unlucky to be run out at 57. In South Auckland’s second innings W. Wilson played attractive cricket to compile 51. His placements showed good judgment. E. Dow (G 3) and R. Wilson (51) put up a flue partnership for Poverty Bay, which passed its opponents’ score by 50, and gained four points. North Auckland v. Auckland. The North Auckland team was opposed by an Auckland side. The country team’s prospects did not appear bright when F. Pa ton got six of its wickets for 14 runs, and the side was out for 143, However, Auckland fared even worse and ils innings closed for 87. North Auckland’s second innings was characterised by a sound and forceful display by V. Vipond, who retired at 104. The score was 231 for the loss of four wickets.
