RACING IN AUSTRALIA

RANDWICK MEETING. BACHIAN WINS STAKES. HIGH-WEIGHT TO CAPRIS. United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright SYDNEY, Dec. 23. The weather was fine and the track good, but there was only a fair attendance at the opening of the Australian Jockey Club's Summer Meeting at Randwick yesterday. The New Zealand-bred colt’ Homer, purchased at the Trentham sales last January for 550 guineas, registered a fine performance in winning the December Nursery Handicap after a terrific duel with the brilliant Queenslander, Ben Field. Ben Field, on the rails, had a slight advantage over Homer to the straight, where they raced neck and neck until 50 -yards from the post, when the strain began to tell on both. Homer, displaying more stamina, won narrowly from the fast-finishing Silver Rose and Gibson, with Ben Field a head away fourth. The Queensland representative, Bachian, led all the way to win the Villiers Stakes from Turbine. The latter moved up from sixth to within half a length of the leader a furlong from home, but could get no closer. Magnitas won the Holiday Handicap convincingly. He was patiently handled until the straight entrance when he flew past the leaders to win comfortably.

G. Price, who trains Homer, had another success in* the last race when the Auckland-owned filly Gapris ran away from tlie High-Weight Handicap field to win as she liked. Results:— lIURDLE RACE, Of £250; about 2 miles.
