SAAR PLEBISCITE

NAZIS DEFY COMMISSION.

DISPLAY OF FLAGS. NO SIGNS OF HOSTILITY. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright SAAHBRUCKEN, Dec. 22. Pile Saar Commission issued an ordei; foi'ljidding the flying of flags after to-day. . T he German Front replied by urg>ng the population to display the 'German flag as a protest. Consequently thousands of Nazi flags are hanging out of windows throughout the town. When the East Lancashires arrived at Saarbrucken station the inhabitants looked on in silence, i This reception surprised the British soldiers, who, on the journey, to the Saar, had been received with cheers, smiles and Nazi salutes at level crossings and stations. The troops were somewhat disappointed on hearing that the display of Nazi bunting was not in their honour, but a political demonstration. There were no signs of hostility. Major-General J. E. S. Brind, Commander of the International Force, said: “We do not expeqt the people of Saarbrucken to be enthusiastic over the presence of foreign troops, but the British soldiers certainly will get on well with them.” PARIS, Dec. 22. Scenes at Calais last night for a few hours resembled those of 1914. Residents flocked to the quayside to welcome the main body of the 'British troops, numbering 1000, en route to the Saar.
