WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

hillcrest branch.

The tenth meeting of the Hillcrest Women’s Institute was held in the Nixon Street, hall on Wednesday, May 10. Mrs Bickerstaff, the ■ president, welcomed a large attendance of members and friends, also two visitors from Fairfield, Mrs Story and Mrs Holla way. The motto selected for the afterneon was: “A stitch in time saves nine," and the roll call, sewing hints." A most interesting and instructive demonstration on dressmaking was given by Madame Burtyl. The sending of a delegate to the conference held in Christchurch was discussed during the afternoon. Owing to the unfavourable weather, the card and dance evening held on Tuesday, May 9. was not as successful as was anticipated. Those who braved the elements spent a very enjoyable evening. The winners of the competitions were: —Euchre, Mr Jameson and Mrs Lynch; five hundred, Mr Green first and Mrs Morley second. The Monte Carlo went to Mr and Mrs Jaiuieson, Mrs Hamilton being the holder of the lucky door ticket. A very enjoyable supper was served, the evening being brought, to a close with the singing of “Anld Lang Syne.”

KIO KIO BRANCH.

A meeting of the Kio Kio branch of the Women's Institute was held, in the Kio Kio Ilall on April it. The president, Mrs T. S. Scown, presided. There were present Mrs Harsant and Mrs Marx, of Te Uku. Mrs Harsant spoke on the work of the institutes, and gave an interesting demonstration in basket work with pine needles. Songs were sung by Miss Flora McDonald and Mrs Cleland A competition was won by Mrs Harsant. , - Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies.

TE AROHA BRANCH,

At the monthly meeting of the Te \roha branch of the Women s Institute Mrs G. Hessell presided. Tne resignation of Mrs Harnlyn, as president, was received with regret. . A letter was read from the . Waikato Federation of Institutes inviting members to a social afternoon on May 23. Mrs W. H. Frost gave an exhibition of wool work, with detailed instructions as to the work. The roll call, "Noise which annoys one the most,” caused considerable amusement.

The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Mackay, J. E. A\'ild, II Rowbotham and Young.

KAIPAKi BRANCH.

When fruit was plentiful a large quantity of jam was made by membeis of the above institute, and stored in readiness for distribution amongst the poor in the winter. At a committee meeting last Thursday it was decided to send Joolb of the jam to the Cambridge Relief Committee for distribution, the rest to go to Mrs Ross, Hamilton, for the same purpose. r lite members are also knitting up old and new wool into squares for bedcovers for the poor.
