MR. ERNEST TORRENCE.

WELL-KNOWN MOVIE ACTOR,

United Press Assn.— Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received May 16, 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 15. Mr. Ernest Torrence; a veteran screen actor, died early this morning, at the age of 54 years. He claimed the distinction of being the first talking picture actor, 20 years ago.

Mr. Torrence has been seen in many films in Hamilton. His work was always convincing, and he was considered one of the best character actors of the screen.

MR C. A. BROWN. AUCKLAND, Tuesday. The death occurred yesterday of Mr Charles Archibald Brown, who had lived in Auckland since 1881. On arrival in Auckland he entered the employment of Macky, Logan, Steen and Company. With the same firm, in Its subsequent developments to its present title as Macky, Logan, Caldwell, Limited, he remained for the rest of his business career, becoming general manager and a member of the board of directors. Mr Brown was a prominent figure in the sporting world, both as an owner of racehorses and as an official of racing clubs. As an owner his pseudonym was '“Mr Archibald.” He was a member of the committee of the committee of the Auckland Racing Club for nearly 20 years, and he was also a member of the Auckland District Committee.

The death has occurred of Mrs Mary Ann Kirkcaldie, aged 84 years, widow of the late Mr John Kirkcaldie, head of the firm of Kirkcaldie and Stains.
