RESPONSE TO APPEAL.

PROVISION OF CASUAL WORK,

The response to the Waikato Time* appeal for the provision of work for Hamilton unemployed during the “offweek," has notwithstanding the shortness of the notice, been very satisfactory. Several Inquiries have been made for men available for odd jobs, and In other cases, which have not come under the official notice of the Unemployed Workers’ Movement or the Welfare League, employers have established direct contact with men. whom they have Immediately placed in some temporary job. Instances of painting and paperhanglng being carried out by unemployed tradesmen have been reported while there have been several cases where gardening work has been provided. . Time still remains for the provision of work during the present week, and It is hoped that many more citlaens will find opportunities for utilising the labour of the unemployed men. In order to ensure that more men will receive work during the next “offweek” which falls on June 12, arrangements are being made for business men and others to make a systematic oanvas of the areas in which they live.

For those who are not able to provide actual work there is the Waikato Times Winter Comfort Fund donations to which will be gratefully acknowledged. ‘'Money given to this fund will be handed over to the Domain Board and the Beautifying Society, which have arranged to supply work to the extent the funds will permit.
