FALSE ECONOMY.

SHIPMENT OF APPLES. TASMANIAN CONSIGNEES SUFFER. MARKET SEVERELY TESTED. United Press Assn. —Eleo. Tel. Copyright. (Received May 15, 9.30 a.m.) ' LONDON, May 14. The apple trade continues good. Prices are fairly well maintained in London and those provincial _ centres which have received direct shipments. The market, however, will he severely tested before long as prospective supplies are heavy, some 350,000 boxes of Australian and 116,000 of New Zealand being due. ito arrive before next Tuesday and still larger quantities in the near future. One disturbing feature is the arrival of 15,000 cases of Tasmanian fruit which were carried as ordinary cargo. As might have been expected, these arrived in an unsatisfactory condition and realised poor prices. Traders cannot understand why fruit should be sent in unrefrigerated space. They regard it |’,s false economy as consignees savo one shilling a case on freight and lose four or live shillings a case in price, to say nothing of the moral and intellectual damage caused by marketing fruit in bad condition.
