FLOWER SHOW.

CHRYSANTHEMUM DISPLAY VENTURE A GREAT SUCCESS. BLOOMS OF FINE QUALITY. Hardly have dahlias and zinnias bowed their heads in'faded glory \vhenchrysanthemums have appeared n their beautiful varieties in the gardens of the waikato. Evidence of the growing interest taken in the cultivation of this bloom in the south Auckland ' district' was given by the encouraging entries received at the Hamilton Horticultural Society's Chrysanthemum. Show which opened in St. Peter’s Hall this afternoon. Over 400 blooms have been benched, a fine achievement when it is remembered that it is the first big show of its kind organised by the society. There is an average of over 6 'entries in each class and some blooms of very high standard are included in the exhibits. Probably the most encouraging feature of the show is the keen competition in the novice classes, indicating an increasing number of floriculturalists in the district. j “The standard throughout was high Y and I found judging extremely difficult,’’ stated the judge, Mr A. E. McMahon, of Auckland. “In fact the quality is in my opinion, superior to that at the Auckland show. Every bloom had to be pojnted before I could arrive at a decision. With a show of this standard I consider the future prospects of the society are very bright.” Mr McMahon said there were few novelty blooms in the show but some, such as “Jason” and “Lord Somers" were well worthy of comment.

Champion Awards,

•Mr H. G. Rainey secured the ohampion of champions, with “Autumn Tints,” a line -specimen, which was •also “champion of any other colour.” Mr J. R. Brown, of Te Awamutu, won the champion yellow with "J. S. Lloyd,” a Japanese incurved type. Another Japanese incurved, “William Turner,” exhibited by Mr A. 'Knapp, was the champion white. The champion pink was Mr S. Hardley’s “Florence," a beautiful bloom with reflex petals. Mr Knapp was also the winner Of the Hamilton amateur Chrysanthemum Qup, presented by Dr. F. D. Pinfold, for the best 12 varieties of blooms. Some dainty entries were seen in the decorative section. The judge, Miss P. C. von Sturmer, remarked that the exhibits in this section were far above the usual standard. Special interest was created by an exhibit of floral work by Miss von Sturmer and a selection of chrysanthemums from the Soldiers’ Memorial Park. Another attractive exhibit of roses was tabled by Mr H. Bennett, of Te Kowhai. / Cnosidering the show gives scope for only one flower, the interest taken is remarkable and augurs well for future displays of this kind by the fx society. Once again the president, Mr [ H. M. Hammond, is the busiest pfficial connected with the show and his services are invaluable to the society. Other onerous duties are carried out by the secretary (Mr W. 11. Allen) with the, co-operation of a live and energetio-committee, consisting chiefly ' of ladies. The show, which will be open this evening and all to-morrow till 9 p.m., merits strong support from every flower-lover. After the show to-mor-row evening all surplus blooms will be Bold. THE AWARDS.
