CHURCH MEN’S SOCIETY
CATHEDRAL BRANOH. YEAR OF STEADY PROGRESS PAST CHAIRMAN’S SERVICES. A year of steady progress was surveyed at the annual meeting of the Cathedral branch of the Church of England Men’s Society on Monday evening. The president, Bishop Cherrington, presided over a,good attendance.
In his report the lay chairman, Mr. F. H. Clapham, mentioned that th» branch had given full attention during the year to the objects of study, work and devotion. In several cases they had assisted in the formation of new branches, Mr. 11. G. Sergei having been especially helpful. His reports on visits paid to Te Awamutu and Taumarunui were an inspiration.-The important event outside the diocese was the national conference at Auckland at which addresses were given by Brothers Cherrlngton and Hay, branch delegates. Special meetings and services held had been a marked success. The membership showed a healthy increase. Brother Barnett, the former president, had left for England and the Bishop was now' president. Brother.. Challlner was welcomed back after residing some time in Christchurch. , Church History Studied. Church history had been the main subject for study and had been keenly followed by members. Concluding, Mr. Clapham expressed thanks for all who had assisted the society and appealed to members to do all possible to help forward church life.
The financial statement showed a credit balance of £3 os, The report and balance-sheet were adopted, The Bishop spoke in warm terms of the splendid services of Brother Clapham during his four consecutive years of office. The following officers were elected:—Chairman, Mr. H. C. M. Norris; deputy-chairman, Mr. F, 11. Clapham; secretary-treasurer, Mr, R. Challlner; auditor. Mr. R, English: executive, Messrs. H. G. Sergei, R; Braithwaite, A, C. A. Caldwell, 0. D. King, E. L. Watkins, and A C. Dimmock; Domipion conference delegates, Messrs. King and Sergei; diocesan council delegates, Messrs. Norris, Clapham and Challlner, It was decided to hold an admission service next Sunday evening and to continue study of church history. In a short address, the Bishop emphasised the duties of members and suggested holding a diocesan conference on June 3. He made special reference to the devoted services to the church of Mr, 11. Seddon Hills of Taumarunui who had been transferred to Whangarei. His Lordship also suggested that the branch could assist in preparing for a 10 days’ parochial •mission at the Cathedral towards the end of the year.
