REVALUATION SOUGHT.

WAIPA COUNTY REQUEST. EFFEOT ON HOSPITAL LEVY. UNFAIRNESS ALLEGED. A decision to ask the Government t® re-value the county was made by the County Council, at Its meeting on Monday, following on the receipt of a letter from the Waikato Hospital Board advising that the amount of levy payable by the county for the current financial year was £3846, an increase of £79 on last year. The Hospital Board secretary pointed out that the increase in the board’s maintenance requirements wa& chiefly due to the necessity for providing for the increase in the cost of goods owing to the sales tax and the rate of exchange. - Cr J. T. Johnson considered the present system of hospital finance through levies on local bodies was inequitable. Why, he asked, should Hamilton, with a population double that of the county and with the hospital at its door, contribute less to- , wards hospital maintenance than the county? Of 'all the contributing bodies the Morrinsville Borough Council was the only one to receive a reduction in levy payable. j “We have asked time and time again for a revaluation of the county and we have always been turned down," added the speaker. “With only one bo'dy getting a reduotion it means the .bodies without a reduction are unfairly penalised.” < Mr T. Grant, county clerk, pointed out that many anomalies existed at present in connection with the valuation of. land. ,

Cr A. Livingstone doubted whether it would be good business to have the county re-valued' at present.

Mr Grant remarked - that land In the county appeared to be over-valued t» the extent of from 25 to 40 per cent.

The chairman, Mr S. /G. Macky, agreed that it was unfair, that the Morrinsville Borough should get revaluation and a lower hospital levy, while other local bodies received an increase.

Cr Livingstone considered. If there were a revaluation to-day the oounty would still be over-valued. A resolution seeking a revaluation from the department was carried. •
