THEFT OF MONEY.
PURSER PLEADS GUILTY. ORDERED TO MAKE RESTITUTION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. Frederick Spencer Hamlin (28), who for the last six months has been attached to the steamer Maori as a purser, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to-day to a charge of stealing sums of money totalling £SB 15s, the property of the Union Steam Ship Company. He was admitted to probation for two years and ordered to make restitution.
It was stated by the police that accused’s duties had involved the collection and handling of money on behalf of the company, and on two occasions he had converted the money to his own use. On one occasion he had gone to the races, and had lost the lot. When approached by the police he had frankly admitted the offence.
