STEAMER DAMAGED.
STRUCK A SNAG IN RIVER. VESSEL BEACHED FOR REPAIRS. The river steamer Rawhlti struck a snag while proceeding down the Waikato River yesterday. The snag penetrated the plating beneath the water line and flooded one of the water-tight compartments. The vessel, which was carrying a cargo of 100 tons of coal, was run on to a sandbank and the water pumped out. The vessel was later able to continue to Port Waikato after some of the coal had been shifted to tilt the bow. Sixty tons of the coal were loaded into the steamer John, which left for Pioton yesterday. The balance of the coal will be taken by the Ilolmglen, due from southern ports later in the week. The damaged steamer has been beached at Port Waikato for repairs.
