FACTORY GUTTED.

FIRE AT EUREKA. MAIN BUILDING SAVED. EARLY MORNING OUTBREAK. An outbreak of Are in the early hours of this morning completely gutted the old brick butter factory which adjoins the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company’s cheese factory al Eureka. The building was used as a garagx and as a store house for coal ana machinery. The lire was first noticed by the factory manager’s son, Mr G. Cresswell, who was returning from a dance at Motumaoho, a few miles away. When ho saw the flames he hurried home and roused his father, Mr C. J. Cresswell, and some of the residents, who formed a bucket brigade, The flames had a good hold by this time, but the workers managed to save the cheese factory, and the two cars in the building were removed undamaged. There were 40 tons of coal in the burning building, and this was still burning this morning.

The Hamilton Fire Bribade was summoned as soon as the magnitude of the outbreak was known, but as there was no adequate water supply and the fire was so far out of Us district, the brigade did not attend. The fire apparently originated near the boiler and spread to the roof oi the brick building. The bucket brigade did wonderful work in saving the cheese factory. There was no disorganisation this morning, and the work proceeded without any hitch. The gutted factory was erected to replace a wooden factory which was destroyed by fire about 20 years ago. The building was covered by insurance, but no figures are available.
