DOUBLE COURSING HARES.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln reference to the correspondence appearing in your journal on the above -subject, please allow me space to add an expression of my experience, viz., that after a hare lias been coursed and consequently heated, it becomes very stiff after lying, even for a short time, and quite unfit for trying the speed and 'skill of the contesting dogs. This is shown at 'every meeting of a hunt -club where the hare clears away from the pack a couple of. times and in the interval lies down. It becomes so stiff when cooled 'that even slow hounds sucoeed in a kill. In a district where hares are plentiful and easily caught, there should be a sufficient number at each •coursing meeting to obviate -double-coursing, and it adds greatly to the pleasure of 'the -spectators to see the hares escape. Having said bare*; are easily •obtained I would like ttj make the suggestion that only male -hares (commonly called buck hares) be coursed, in which case very few, If one, would be killed on a -short course such as the local one.. It would be - a great improvement if a clearance were made of the tufty gorso on the Frankton course, which Is growing closely on one side. Some adverse remarks have been made in -the correspondence as te other officials speaking to the judge. As a spectator of -experience, 1 can -say that the judge’s decisions wore unquestionable at the -meeting referred to.
Trusting that my suggestions may, if you are pleased to print them, have favourable consideration of the committee of the club. —I am, etc., COURSING ENTHUSIAST. Hamilton, July 30, 1932.
