SETTLEMENT OF WORKLESS
A WHAKATANE SCHEME. SUBMITTED TO MINISTERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. A scheme to place 5000 meh on the land, as a means of overcoming the unemployment problem, was placed before Messrs J. G. Coates (Minister of Employment) and E. A. Ransom (Minister of Lands), and C. E. MacMillan (Minister of Agriculture), by Messrs W. Sullivan (Mayor of Whakatane), P. B. Baird, and A. C. Sutherland, who represented a committee of residents In the Whalcatane district, who formulated it. The basis of the scheme is an internal loan of £6,150,000, and the proposed settlement is to be of a permanent character. ■ Grown land suitable for dairying under the scheme is to be open to anyone who in the Opinion of the committee appointed to control the scheme would become a suitable settler and who Is not possessed of sufficient land to make a living. The Ministers agreed that the soheme was worthy of consideration.
