MAORI DROWNED
IN THE WAIKATO RIVER. ATTEMPTED RESCUE FAILS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) RANGIRIRI, Tuesday. Thomas Ngaha, aged 27 years, married, was drowned in the Waikato river on Saturday afternoon. With two other young Maoris, John Tumal and Peroy Dickson, he started to race across the river, which is about 7} chains wide at this point, with a very strong current. Taumai turned back. Diokson eventually got ashore, but Ngaha was carried away and was seen to sink. His wife unsuccessfully attempted to rescue him in a ; oanoe.
