DISTRESS IN TE AROHA.
COMMITTEE APPOINTED. The Mayor, Mr R. Coulter, presided at a well-attended public meeting al Te Arolia to consider the matter of assisting cases of distress in Te Aroha. He referred to the reduction in the unemployment subsidy, which meant a shortage of money for deserving cases. There were a number of cases of real distress that required attention. Thanks were due to the settiers of Waltoa and Springdale, who had forwarded gifts of stuck and produce. The meeting had been called for the purpose of forming an organisation to take in hand the matter of meeting cases of distress. A large committee was formed, with power to add, to carry out arrangements for the purpose in view. Several suggestions were made, including a thorough canvass for subscriptions, the holding of a “shop” for the sale of gifts, a concert, and other functions.
It was decided that a drive for donations be instituted at once.
