TRAINING AT RICCARTON. NEW ZEALAND CUP MEETING. SOME SMART PERFORMANCES. (By Telegraph—Special to Tlme.l.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Practically all horses were kept to easy pacing on Sunday and Monday. The only two to go fast were the two-years-olds, Monastic and Palace. They, separately, sprinted three furlongs on the No. 6 grass and both went brilliantly, Monastic ran 36 2-5 s and Palace, who had much the lighter weight, 35 2-ss. This morning the outside of the course proper was open. Rain fell overnight but not enough to spoil the going which was good and fast. Subdivision was first out. He dashed over half a mile in 49s and did it well with a little boy up. Praise and Jaloux, both carrying over 8.6, worked on the plough. They cantered once round and then jumped off at the mile post. The first five furlongs took 1.8 3-5. Then the pace was put on and they completed the mile in lm 4 7s. Praise held the gelding very easily. Recovering From Cold.

Paquito, who was brought home over the last six, galloped seven furlongs in lm 31 2-ss, carrying over 8.0. He may race later in the meeting as the cold that has been troubling is leaving him.

Hunting Day, with H. Gray up, sprinted four furlongs in 50 3-5 s and could have done better. He is a bold goer and he looks particularly well. Spoon, with a featherweight up, galloped seven furlongs in lm 29 4-ss. She was all out. Havering had a slight advantage of Don Jose at the finish of seven furlongs done in lip 295. The first three furlongs took 37 3-ss. Both are well and were running on at the finish. Consent impresses. Consent and Laughing Prince were matched over six furlongs. A little boy rode Laughing Prince, while R. Reed was on his mate. Laughing Prince, who had the inside running, was hunted along over the last furlong, while Reed never moved on Consent. The lime was lm 16s and it was a really good performance on Consent’s part. On pulling up lie looked as if the gallop would do him good. Riri was to have been brought home over the last part of seven- furlongs but Riri hung in and was pulled up after taking several trestles in his stride. Cadland and Tenterden, with featherweights up, were tried out over a mile. Both llnished well but Cadland had about a length the best of it in lm 42 2-ss. The last six furlongs took lm 17s.

Some Cup Horses. Star Stranger, Count Palatine, Gay Crest and In the Shade galloped ten furlongs. Love Song went with them for the first six furlongs, his mission being to make the pace.. The pace set was not strong. Love Song and Gay Crest led from Star Stranger and In the Shade with Count Palatine last. The first six furlongs took lm 20 3-ss. Then the pace livened up a bit but they all appeared to be watching each other. In the Shade dropped out three furlongs from home and the others ran past the winning post together. All three went well and were running on, especially Count Palatine. In the Shade appeared to be in a sulky mood. Havaspot and Courtesy were held up at the six furlong.peg for a long time owing to Courtesy playing up. Eventually they got away together, the first two furlongs taking 24 4-5 s and the full journey 1.15 2-ss. They were carrying light weights and Havaspot appeared to have a shade the best of it. It was a smart gallop.

Meprisant, with A. Eastwood up, galloped a mile. The first half took 52 2-5 s and the mile lm-Ti 4-ss. He was not out to do his best and it was a very nice piece of work. My Own, brought home by Jenny Diver, was given a working gallop over ten furlongs.

To Awamutu Fair. Prodice and Desert Glow were given a strong gallop on the plough. They were under a pull together all the way. The last six furlongs took lm 20,1-ss. Ranelagh w r as not doing his best while running six furlongs in lm 19s. Pangolin was schooled over four flights of hurdles. He jumped in his usual brilliant fashion. Cylinder, Appledore, Paratoo and Sargon set out to gallop ten furlongs. At the finish Cylinder was going .easily alongside Appledore with Paratoo a length away, ten lengths ahead of Sargon, who was tailed off all the way. The first six furlongs took lm 20s" and the journey 2.12 3-5. Cylinder finished particularly well and appeared to outclass his companions. All four carried small boys. Chrysology beat Commandant very easily and by a. good margin over seven furlongs in lm 33 4-ss.

Count Cavour and Gustavo galloped seven furlongs in lm 34s on the plough. They were not all out. Gustavo pulled up sound. There is still some heat in his leg but his trainer hopes to get him to the -races. ■ Great Star, brought home by Call Girl, ran five furlongs in lm 3s. He was all out and he should have done better. Vertigern, with A.- Eastwood in the saddle, galloped a mile in lm 42 2-ss. He finished well and it was a good performance. Tea Chat and Royal Baby with Innuendo at their heels sprinted half a mile in 48 3-ss. The leaders were hunted out but Innuendo was always going well. Head Serang and Royal Parade could have improved upon the lm 18 1-5 they took to run six. furlongs. Admiral Drake, who was in receipt of a lump of weight, finished a length ahead of White Fang at the end of six furlongs. The last half mile took 50 3-ss.

The Topwelght In Action. Nightmarch, the New Zealand Cup topweight, was galloped nine furlongs his owner being present. Nightmarch carried a light saddle. A. Eastwood rode him. True Shaft carried him along for the first four furlongs and a half and Knockany brought, him home the last- four. The first furlong was run in 13 2-5 s from a trotting up start, the, five in lm 4 l-5s and the full journey in lm 54 2-ss. The last

mile took lm 41s and he was travelling freely at any stage, of his gallop. Also he pulled up well. It was not a sensational performance but it was really good. ® , Pride, Swiftray and Ilkey were not all out to run half a mile in 49 4-ss. All three galloped well. . Lochlaggan, who looks as if she is not doing well, took 52 2-5 s to sprint half a mile with C. Emerson up. She was not all out. Compris was given a working gallop over seven furlongs and Flair had Minerval as a companion in a gallop over six furlongs that took im 18 2-ss. Chief Light and Irish Chieftain were to have sprinted half a mile together but Chief Light took charge of A. Eastwood. After that they separately ran home at three-quarter pace. Lately they have come on a lot.

The Fastest Six.

Te Awahina, carrying about 8.0 and brought home by Eton Hall recorded the fastest time over six furlongs for the morning. She ran the first quarter of a mile in 25 2-5 s and completed her task in lm 15s. The last half mile was done in 49 3-5 s she finished particularly well. If 11.
