THE TOTALISATOR.

FIVE SHILLING TICKETS. PROPOSAL MEETS . FAVOUR. (Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The “five shilling tote,” the cunning device which is to gather in the coppers from the half crown investors at the Takapuna race meeting this month, is not in half as much disfavour with the punting public as the promoters of the bigger meetings would have their patrons believe. Quite probably the five shilling ticket will tempt many a small punter to get two shots out of his half-sovereign instead of one, and so give the attendants more trouble than they otherwise would have had; but this will not lessen the clubs’ revenue or deteriorate the quality of their sport. After all, it is only about ten per cent, of those who go racing who devote their whole attention to money making. The “good sport” seeks fun and exhilaration from his day’s outing and often as not is to be found among the outsiders and the lovers of horses.
