CROQUET

WHITIORA CLUB’S OPENING. Ideal weather favoured the Whitiora Croquet Club for their opening on Saturday. The picturesque lawns were at their best, and with their borders of lovely Iceland poppies were greatly admired. There was a large gathering of members and their friends, the function being most enjoyable. ' In a charming little speech the president, Mrs Turbott, welcomed the visitors, and introduced Mr Mason, the first president of the Club, hoping one and all would have a pleasurable afternoon, and asked Mr Mason to make the first hoop, declaring the green open for play. ■ A dainty afternoon tea was served in the club-room, which was prettily decorated with streamers of blue and gold, lovely hanging baskets of wis-* teria, andithe vases on the table held Argentine sweet-pea and Iceland poppies. After tea the members held a card evening at the pavilion, when flag bridge was played, the winning table being Mrs C. Ncwson, Mrs R. Street and Mr Doug. Andrews.
