“THIS MAD WORLD.”
WELL-ACTED, TENBE STORY. AT THE CIVIC THEATRE. Very often a much-boomed film disappoints when seen; at other times a little-boosted picture proves intensely interesting. “This Mad World,” now being shown at the Civic Theatre, is in the latter class; it is one of the finest productions seen in Hamilton, telling a touse, gripping, logical story, with some of the most powerful acting yet brought to the screen. “This Mad World,” is a compelling drama dealing with the indirect effect of the war on the lives of individuals of opposing Although it is a drama based on the war it does not include any scenes of actual warfare, It is concerned with the conflict- between love and duty in the hearts of a man and a woman, each of whom is in reality the enemy of the other. How the barriers of nationality arc swept aside by the greater power of love makes an absorbing story, in which the interest of the audience is held from beginning to end. Kay Francis, whose work .in “Dynamite” was so outstanding, and Basil Rathbone, that polished English actor with the delightful voice, who made such a hit in “The Last of Mrs Cheyney.” have powerful roles, and give v i\id performances. Louise Dresser, as the mother, also gives a very fine performance. The supporting programme is varied and entertaining.
