DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS PLAY STARTED THIS MORNING. THE OPEN CONTEST. (By Telegraph.—press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Friday. Following a period of unsettled weather the climatic conditions were unfavourable for the opening of the championship golf tournament at Holowhitu Links this morning. A high wind was blowing, with a threat of rain. The course is in excellent order, but a trifle holding after the recent rains. There is strong representation of the leading amateur and professional golfers, but the conditions prevailing this morning are expected to militate against the best form being produced and first-class cards are not expected under circumstances.

The Open Championship. Shortly after eight o’clock the first pair were despatched on the first round of the open championship, held by the professional, A. J. Shaw, of Napier, who returned the remarkable card of 70 during a round at Hokowhitu this week. In conjunction therewith there Is being played the first qualifying round of the amateur and professional championship. There are eighty-eight competitors in the open event, including twenty professionals. P. D. Daniells was disqualified for playing a wrong ball. At,noon the -best card returned was that of B. V. RECORD FOR THE COURSE. SHAW’S SENSATIONAL 69. (By Telegraph.—press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Friday. A. C. Shaw, of Napier, professional, who is in wonderful form, achieved a record for the course this morning, when he did a round in the sensational figure of 69. The other day he went round in 70, but as one hole was not played out, he could not get the course record. This he obtained this morning, displacing the previous one of 71, registered by the local amateur, Ekstedt. Shaw went out in 34, three under bogey, and returned in 35. Shaw was partnered by A. D.
