RUGBY IN HAMILTON.

TO-MORROW’S MATCHES. ■ HAMILTON SENIOR ROUND. INTERESTING STAGE REACHED. 'The Anal series of matches of the first round in the senior Rugby competition for the Sage Cup at Hamilton will be played to-morrow. The championship table reveals a very interesting position. Frankton, the leading team, have a bye to-morrow and cannot be displaced by the results of the next games. They will, however, be running neck and neck with Old Boys if the latter arc successful over City. In view of the improved form and combination displayed by the former champions last Saturday, a battle royal should eventuate. On No. 2 ground the other senior match will be staged between Marist and Technical Old Boys. The Marist forwards gave an impressive performance last Saturday and should prove troublesome if in similar condition. On the other hand Marist schould meet with strong opposition from the Technical backs. Both these matches are scheduled to start at 3 p.m. The other senior team, Frankton, will visit Cambridge to play Hautapu. Matches in the junior and other grades will be advanced further to-morrow. NOTES AND COMMENTS. I (By ‘‘Old Timer.’’) The Walton—Putaruru fixture was staged on No. 1 ground as the chief attraction at Matamata on Saturday, and a fair number of spectators divided their attention between this match, and the amusement .always provided by the Maoris, who were meeting Matamata on No. 2 area. Walton won by 10 points to 4, but territorially honours were even. On the line-outs and in the loose the packs were well matched, but Walton got more than its share of the ball from the set scrums. Neither set of backs showed any decent combination, the ball rarely passing through more than two pair of hands, with the consequence that all the wingers were practically spectators for most of the game. Walton Has Some Talent. Rawiri and Dixon, the Walton hookers, were very successful in securing the ball and it came out more cleanly than in any other match this season. Putaruru, at times, went down in a 3-4 formation, and when they did were more successful in securing possession. J. Carroll, for Walton, was again their outstanding forward. Playing as breakaway, Garroll was in every movement. He gets away at the right time and was a considerable source of annoyance to the visiting backs. Martin, Johnston, Dixon and Rawiri were always in the thick of it. Kuhtz, who is captain, manager, general and player in any position in the Walton team, played rover, and his coolness and knowledge stands as an example lo his club mates. Groube, behind the pack, is improving and fed his hacks consistently. Fauselt was tried at inside five-eighths. “Curly” ran strongly hut there was no understanding between him and A. Wallace, llio latter not supporting speedily enough. Wallace lias lo learn that when the man in front is running into his pass it is time he began to take an interest in things. W. Carroll, at centre, seldom received the ball from ihe inside men and when he did come into the picture he had to make his own opportunities. Dixon, as full-back, fielded well and kicked strongly with good direction. Good Patururu Pack. The Putaruru team possesses some fine types of forwards and though beaten for the hall the pack was quite as good as its opponents in other departments. Lory impressed as a fine forward and must have strong claims for inclusion in Ihe representative team. Scholz, Mills and Fraser are oilier good men in the pack. Ensor, a younger brother of the Waikato representative, is a fine cut ol" a forward. He has just recovered from au illness and was taking it easy. Smith, at half, did not impress. Dunlop, to my mind, is too big and raking for a first five-eighth, somewhat slow in getting off the mark and also lardy with his transfers. The midget, Paterson, is i 110. “King pin” or I lie Putaruru rearguard: lie did the work of five, men and his was the most finished display by an inside back in the Union this year. h the physique of a light-

weight jockey, he must have a heart * like a bullock and it will be interesting to note what conclusion selector Hollis comes to, -in Paterson’s case, when the reps are chosen. Broughton, who played centre, must learn to run straight. He jammed his wings, Judge and Allwood consistently, and these men had no opportunity to show their ability on attack. No fault could he found with the performance of Inman, the Putaruru full-back, on Saturday. Time and again he came to the rescue of his side with safe handling and well judged kicking. Rep. Possibilities. Mr W. L. Hollis has picked 20 men to go into hard training for representative matches and he will put down a scrum averaging something under 13 stone. Lack of pace by the breakaways and back-row men will be a weakness hard to remedy without a sacrifice of weight. Outside the scrum the Matamata Club will provide the majority of players, but there are several places to fill and placing the men to the best ad wantage will give Mr Hollis much food for thought. The juniors arc having' a keen struggle for premiership honours. Wardville, Patetere and Old Boys arc level. Hinuera is a point behind, with Matamata capable enough to challenge any of them. Mr A. G. Yardley, president of the Waikato Union, was among who met the British team on the wharf when they arrived at Wellington, and also attended the civic reception. Mr Yardley was impressed with th§ fine physique of the forwards, but is quietly confident in the wearers of the silver ferm. WAIPA UNION. FJXTURES FOR SATURDAY. Seniors.—Pirongia v.
