PUBLIC WORKS

USE OF DEPARTMENT’S PLANT. WORKERS DISSATISFIED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The use of the Public Works Department’s plant,on a rental basis, as an alternative to reduction in the present rates of pay,, is a proposal which the Minister of Public Works is submitting to the co-operative parties engaged in the construction of the Tawa flat tunnels. Consideration was given to the proposal at a meeting of the men at Johpsonville, when a resolution was carried expressing dissatisfaction with the Minister’s suggestion. Hon. E. A. Ransom explains that the original contract price was based, on work being carried out without the heavy plant which the department had installed, and a clause was inserted in the contract papers, that the price would he revised when the plant was working. “ The plant is . now in operation, but a revision of the price has not been made.-' This is what I propose," said the Minister.
