TOWN AND COUNTRY.

STEP IN RIGHT DIRECTION, FARMERS’ UNION DISCUSSION. “If the town and country can work In together it will certainly be a step in the right direction,” said Mr T. 11. Henderson, president of the Waikato Sub-provincial branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union yesterday, following a discussion on the question of a suggested conference with the Chamber of Commerce to discuss matters affecting town and country alike. There existed a considerable amount of misunderstanding between the parties, if they could be so termed, and a round-table discussion of that nature could not help, but be of benefit to both- The time had arrived,, in the ■opinion of the chairman when men should sink their petty differences and strive for the good of the community as a whole.

Mr Henderson considered that party politics were the curse of the country at the present time, and any Government which permitted the unemployment that existed to-day, when huge areas of land lay idle, was failing in its duty. It was the duty of the Government to find work for these men. Mr T. J. Roach thought the question one too wide to he fully discussed in the short time at their disposal. The spirit of economy and self-denial which had characterised the early pioneers was a thing of the past. The people of the present day were not willing to deny themselves the luxuries of life and preferred the comparatively easy life of the town to the more exacting life of the soil. After further discussion a sub-com-mittee was set up to meet representatives of the Chamber of Commerce at a date to be arranged.
