VALUELESS CHEQUES
HALF-CASTE CONVICTED
GOOD SOLDIER, BAD CIVILIAN.
(Bv Tetegrapn—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Friday. Described by his counsel as "an excellent soldier but a rotten civilian,” Henry Ray Vercoe (48), a half-caste Maori, was to-day sentenced by the magistrate, Mr Hunt, to six months’ gaol, to be followed by 12 months’ refermative treatment, on eight charges of obtaining £36 by valueless cheques. Vercoe served in the Soutn African and Great Wars.
Counsel further stated that in the Court that very morning Mr Tole, the incoming president ol' the Law Society, informed him that Vercoe was the bravest man he ever saw at the front, and he had recommended him for the Victoria Cross. He owned 2000 acres of land and was to have received £3OO from the Native Land Court, but recently the matter was held up by some proclamation. He had been convicted of false pretences in 1912, 1922 and 1928.
