SUBSIDY FOR ROAD.

SELF-RELIANT SETTLERS. MINISTER MAKES A GRANT. (Special to Times-) TAHUNA, Saturday. To a deputation which waited on him at Morrinsville to-day, the Minister of Public Works promised to give a subsidy of £l5O, being £2 for £1 on the cost of metalling Messrs Jones and Jensens’ Road at Tahuna. The circumstances are that Messrs Jones and Jensen are crown settlers. They purchased, fenced, and drained the land for a road and had handed it over to the county free of cost. They, therefore, considered themselves Justified in asking for this subsidy as they considered they had helped themselves.

This was the story told by Mr F. Lye, M.P., who introduced the deputation.
